The first set of 71’s was dipped in many plating solutions, each with different metals in it, with little documentation, and thus have a “tree ring” quality when cut. He is one of two co-founders of Bocci, a Canadian design and manufacturing company. His output is broad, including materials research, lighting design, building design and site specific installations. We found these shapes interesting and began a set of experiments meant to encourage and accelerate the process of accretion. Omer Arbel is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Vancouver. We observed that over many years of use, small “blooms” of metal with distinctive form accrete on the tips of these hooks. Based between Vancouver and Berlin, Omer Arbel cultivates a fluid position between the fields of building, sculpture, invention, and design. An electrical current is passed through the hook and part into the solution, which causes an electromagnetic field to form around the metal part, in turn causing molecules of the metal inside the solution to coat the suspended metal part. Omer Arbel Office is the creative hub of a constellation of companies Bocci among them structured to realize ideas of varying scale and across a wide spectrum of contexts and environments. Conventionally electroplated metal parts are suspended within an electroplating solution containing molecules of a different metal using hooks. The experiments that led to 71 began with an observation during a visit to an electroplating facility. Can you tell us about your most memorable experiment and the project that resulted from it? You’ve experimented with so many materials across the years. This process usually leads to what I call a ‘discovery’, a form that we find compelling, mysterious, and worthwhile. “We try to invent new ways of working with these material properties such that they yield new, unpredictable forms. “Generally, we begin (the design process) with a certain physical, mechanical or chemical property of whatever material we are working with,” Arbel explains. With a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, GlobalGiving is one of the most reliable and trustworthy charities in the world.Unlike other designers who might prefer starting their projects with an initial vision or a sketch and a prototype, Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist and designer Omer Arbel prefers to dive right in and start directly from what he deems the core of the craft: experimenting with materials. The proceeds of this purchase will go to GlobalGiving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, providing Ukrainians with shelter, food, and clean water health and psychosocial support and economic assistance. Led by creative director Omer Arbel, Bocci creates stunning lighting solutions of the utmost quality and craftsmanship. Arbel’s pieces have been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Spazio Rossana Orlandi, Mallett, Monte Clark Gallery and Dimore Gallery. The semi-rigid black fabric cord includes a patented integral 360 degree dimming system.Īvailable options: US or EU plug. Omer Arbel explores the intrinsic mechanical, physical, and chemical qualities of materials as fundamental departure points for making work. The 28.6 Floor Light features 6 glass globes mounted on a sleek brass cylinder. Interior opaque milk-glass diffusers conceal the bulbs, ensuring a gentle glow. The 28.6 Floor Light is part of Bocci’s 28 Series, which is crafted through a proprietary glass blowing process that manipulates both temperature and airflow, resulting in highly organic, sculptural forms. All proceeds support GlobalGiving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, providing urgently needed humanitarian aid to Ukrainian communities suffering in the wake of the Russian invasion. This design has been donated by Bocci as part of our Design for Ukraine fundraiser.
